Trooping the colour goes back centuries. All that 'marching up and down' has a purpose. The colour was a rallying point for troops in battle. It was paraded, or 'trooped' in front of the respective regiment so that all would know their centre in battle. The colours are trooped every four years in every British regiment. The Household division (Guards and Life Guards) do their troop on the Queens official (not actual) birthday. It's tradition, some say it may not have a place in the modern world. Tell that to any British soldier who has trooped their colours and witness the reaction. It bonds them and gives them a sense of family. It is why in the history of the British Army, nobody broke and ran.
